Before we begin to learn how to train a Pitbull, let us look at the characteristics and temperament of the breed. Pit bulls were created by breeding bulldogs and terriers together to produce a dog that combined the gameness and agility of the terrier with the strength of the bulldog. Pit bulls successfully fill the role of companion dogs, police dogs, and therapy dogs. Pit bulls also constitute the majority of dogs used for illegal dog fighting in America.

Pitbull Facts:

Socialization & Training Pitbulls

Pitbulls require possibly more socialization training during puppy-hood, possibly more than other dog breeds. Like any dog, a Pit bull that is well socialized is less likely to attack when it feels threatened. The Pit bull breed is known to be more “rough and tumble” during play time, but frequent socialization with other dogs can mean that a Pit bull pet goes into adulthood with a positive feeling towards other dogs. Without proper socialization, they are more prone to act aggressively.

Dog owners in the United States can be held legally liable for injuries inflicted or caused by their dogs. In general, owners are considered liable if they were unreasonably careless in handling or restraining the dog, or if they knew beforehand that the dog had a tendency to cause injury (e.g., bite); however, dog owners are automatically considered liable if local laws hold an owner strictly liable for all damage caused by their dog, regardless of carelessness or foreknowledge of a dog’s tendencies.

A 1991 study found that 94% of attacks on children by pit bulls were unprovoked, compared to 43% for other breeds.  Additionally a 20-year (1979–1998) study by the American Veterinary Medical Association into fatal dog attacks on humans concluded that “fatal attacks on humans appear to be a breed-specific problem (Pitbull-type dogs and Rottweilers).

Teamwork from all members of the house is very important when teaching our Pitbull to be gentle. Teaching Your Pitbull To Respect

Pitbulls love people and therefore they can be quite loving and loyal to their owners. To train your dog you must have a structured training routine. The sessions should not last longer than 10-15 mins. You may start training the puppy at 5 or 6 months. Do not make the mistake of waiting too long to train your puppy otherwise he may adopt some bad habits that you may regret and may take extra effort and time to retrain and get rid of the bad habit.

If in a family, it is important that one person takes the lead to teach the dog. With just one trainer, the dog will not be easily sidetracked. Additionally, the Pitbull will identify the trainer/owner as the “Alpha” leader, and give them respect.
